Before we had Samuel we were blind to disabilities. Yes we knew they were out there, but for most of my life I’ve just plodded along without giving it much thought. We only live five minutes drive from Julia’s House children’s hospice, but still didn’t give it much thought. I probably didn’t want to in case I found it upsetting. I thought a children’s hospice was all about end of life care when in fact it’s a fantastic nursery and youth club!

But now I have Samuel and he has opened the door to a big new world. I’m in regular contact with families and children that have a wide range of medical needs and disabilities. And when I say big world, believe me, you may not know it but families like ours are everywhere with special children adding an extra sparkle to the world!

Blog challenge – Let’s talk disabilities!

So, now it’s your turn to talk disabilities. Samuel and I challenge you fellow bloggers out there to write a post about disabilities and special needs. You don’t have to have a direct connection with disabilities like me. The post doesn’t have to be about Samuel but about your experiences, or maybe lack of them, of disabilities. Your understanding, fears and misconceptions. Maybe you’ve met someone who has touched your heart. You could write about benefit provision for the disabled, the important role the NHS plays or fundraising for disability charities…anything goes.

If you are a parent of a child with disabilities what would your message be to those people who aren’t part of our special world?
